The Student Council had been granted the Keep Whitehouse Beautiful award to beautify the west side of the building, which faces Hwy. 110. The raised flower beds and flowers were added from the grant and students also cleaned the front flower bed and the PK flower bed, weeding and planting. Twenty rose bushes were planted, lantana, and rose moss. Thank you, Student Council, parents, and Mrs. Elliott.

]]> http://keepwhitehousebeautiful.com/join-keep-america-beautiful-this-earth-day/feed/ 0 Pictures from the 2012 Don’t Mess With Texas Trash Off http://keepwhitehousebeautiful.com/pictures-from-the-2012-dont-mess-with-texas-trash-off/ http://keepwhitehousebeautiful.com/pictures-from-the-2012-dont-mess-with-texas-trash-off/#comments Sat, 14 Apr 2012 22:08:59 +0000 pofwert http://keepwhitehousebeautiful.com/?p=718 Hundreds of volunteers from all walks of life appeared at Whitehouse City Park beginning at 8:00am to sign up for the 2012 Don’t Mess With Texas Trash Off.   Starting at 8:00am, as a gusty wind blowed, volunteers from Keep Whitehouse Beautiful formed them into teams, handed out free t-shirts, gave them refreshments and sent them on their way to pick up trash and debris.  The streets were cleaned from Hwy 110 North, to FM 346 both east and west, to FM 344, Hagan Road, Old Tyler Road and others.   The Trash Off is the signature event for Keep Whitehouse Beautiful and part of the larger Great America Cleanup, sponsored by Keep America Beautiful.

According to Keep Whitehouse Beautiful President Dorothy LaFlure, “It makes all the difference in the world. It’s not only the fact that they are picking up litter that day. They’re also making everyone there aware of litter and those driving by aware of litter.”

We want to thank everyone who participated this year and made a statement about how they care about their community!

The Whitehouse Large Item Roundup ( also known as Clean Whitehouse Day ) is fast approaching, and the weather is perfect to go through your house and look for those broken, outdated and replaced items such as appliances, furniture, outdoor furniture and grills, mattresses and toys, according to Event Coordinator Eddie Ray.  In addition to these items, a whole new set of items are now being accepted, electronic stuff! A local company, STS Electronic Recycling will have a truck on site for residents wishing to drop off old and broken electronic equipment.  Items such as monitors, computers, cell phones, radios, fax machines, digital cameras and more are accepted.   A full list of items accepted is below this article.  Tires are welcome too, for a $2 disposal fee. Yard waste, construction debris, paints and chemicals are NOT ALLOWED.

The Whitehouse Large Item Roundup is scheduled for Saturday, March 24th from 8:00am – 12:00pm at the Whitehouse Recycle Center, on Railroad Avenue south of FM 346.   This is a twice yearly event sponsored by the City of Whitehouse and Keep Whitehouse Beautiful for the benefit of Whitehouse residents.

As stated by a representative from STS Electronic Recycling, “We can aid you in recycling out of date, nonworking, or unwanted electronic equipment.  THIS RECYCLING SERVICE IS PROVIDED AT NO COST TO YOU. All recyclables processed by STS Electronic Recycling are either reused or physically destroyed and recycled.  We assure you that your business or personal information will be destroyed to Department of Defense (DOD) standards and we will provide you with a certificate of destruction if desired.  Please visit our website at www.stsrecycle.com for more information.”

]]> http://keepwhitehousebeautiful.com/large-item-roundup-saturday-march-24th/feed/ 0 KWB Outstanding Yard! http://keepwhitehousebeautiful.com/kwb-outstanding-yard/ http://keepwhitehousebeautiful.com/kwb-outstanding-yard/#comments Sat, 28 Jan 2012 19:11:17 +0000 pofwert http://keepwhitehousebeautiful.com/?p=699 Keep Whitehouse Beautiful recently awarded the “Outstanding Yard” to Stephen and Susan Crank of 2005 Silver Cove in the Waterton subdivision.  Their yard was chosen due to the beautiful palm trees, flower beds and other shrubbery making the front lawn just exquisite, according to yard nominators Roth Loper and Juanita Hagan.  The landscaping was installed before the Cranks bought it in 2009, but they have done an excellent job maintaining it, and adding new items like the pebble mulch in the beds, a climbing rosebush over the mailbox and annual pansies in different colors.  Other trees in the yard are a Shumard Oak, and a Southern Wax Myrtle.

The Cranks receive a $25 gift certificate to Senter’s Nursery, the sponsor of the Outstanding Yard program, and a sign for their front yard.  If you know of a yard deserving the title “Outstanding”, please send an email to info@keepwhitehousebeautiful.com

We are looking for individuals, organizations, student classes, businesses and neighborhoods to help us this year.  It’s a half-day filled with fun and fellowship while helping to make a difference in our community.

“Last year we had more than 300 people and we are expecting a great turnout again from our community,” said Debbie Shafer, KWB President. “These volunteers make all the difference in the world. It’s not only the fact that they are picking up litter that day. They’re also making everyone who is driving by aware of litter. Trash doesn’t just ‘go away.’ Someone has to pick it up–so don’t throw it out in the first place.”

The event starts at Whitehouse City Park for registration and t-shirt pickup for the first 300 participants.  Then it’s off to a section of roadway with a group to pick up trash.

This year, let’s continue to Keep Whitehouse Beautiful by recycling most of our holiday leftovers!   Both cardboard boxes such as gift boxes and / or shipping boxes can be recycled at the Whitehouse Recycle Center as well as wrapping paper, without the bows and ribbon, of course.  No Styrofoam or cellophane, either, please!

As for live Christmas trees, they are not being accepted this year at the Recycle Center, but that doesn’t mean you should put yours in the garbage, as IESI is not accepting them either.   There are 2 places in Tyler that are accepting live Christmas trees:  Golden Road Park at the intersection of McDonald & Golden Roads and Fun Forest Park in the 900 Block of North Glenwood Boulevard.  Collection for LIVE trees only begins the Monday after Christmas and lasts until January 8th.  Trees must be free of all decorations, garland, tinsel and NOT be flocked.

There’s quite a demand for live Christmas trees, as they become habitats for fish in the area lakes.  Now that’s recycling at it’s BEST!

The Whitehouse Recycle Center is located on Railroad Avenue, just south of FM 346.  They are open the first and third Saturdays of each month, 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and every Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Check out the Recycling tab on our homepage for more items accepted at the Recycle Center.

Try recycling, if you are not already……Just start with one item, like newspapers or cans.   The Whitehouse Recycle Center is open during convenient hours and accepts many types of recyclable items.   There are people there who will help unload your items from your car when you arrive.

If you are already recycling, GREAT!  Add some more items to your RECYCLE list…..it’s amazing how much less trash can be put out at the curb each Wednesday when there is recycling in the household!
